The Gateway's Walter Payton Cancer Fund was created by the Payton family to honor Walter’s life. After witnessing the ravaging effects of cancer on her husband, Connie Payton was determined to direct funding toward researchers seeking a cure with the same grit and determination that Walter showed on the football field as well as during his battle with cancer.
Connie chose The Gateway for Cancer Research to administer the Walter Payton Cancer Fund. The Walter Payton Cancer
fund seeks to further research with a focus on the use of complementary and alternative medicine combined with conventional therapies. It is a natural fit with The Gateway’s mission to advance innovative research that can bring new treatment options to today’s cancer patients.
Out of this fund was born the idea of the run. The Gateway’s Walter Payton Run is a special way to continue Walter’s legacy by bringing together athletes and run enthusiasts whose participation can help The Gateway’s Walter Payton Cancer Fund make real strides in working toward a cure.
Now in its 7th year, the run has grown and gained momentum. This year’s move to Soldier Field has elevated the run to whole new level. The move makes it possible for so many more people to become aware and involved in The Gateway’s very important mission.
The Gateway’s Walter Payton Run is now moving to Spring 2011, stay tuned for further details!
